Emperor Kangxi was a very important person in Ancient China. He was the longest ever Emperor in the history of China until he died in 1722. Kangxi loved peace and prosperity. He was very wealthy and popular. He was Emperor of China for 61 years. He was the second Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. He was a master in Confucianism. He was eductaed and throughour his life he never stopped learning. He believed that people gaining knowledge and education would lead the nation to peace and harmony.
People respected Kangxi, because, unlike other famous rulers, he didn't kill a lot of people or torture them. Towards the end of his life he chose not to tax poor people because he had enough money.
He was keen for the territory to expand and started learning and trading with the Europeans.
He learnt a lot Jesuit advisor as he thought he could learn from them and he allowed them to live in the Forbidden city with him. Even though the main religions at the time were Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism, it was thought Kangxi became Christian. He ordered that Catholicism was allowed to be practiced, stopped taxed on churches and legalised missions.
However fights started when Chinese Christians still wanted to take part in Confucian ceremonies. The Pope ordered that there should be a ban on Chinese ceremonies, so Kangxi decided to later forbid missions and closed down churches. By the end of his reign the Qing Empire controlled all of China proper, Taiwan, Manchuria, part of the Russian far East (outer Manchuria), both inner and outer Mongolia and Tibet proper.
